THE EMERALD CASTLE

Across the sea in Ireland,
There a fair young maid did dwell;
Living in an emerald castle
By the river Shannons' swell.

'Tis said that leprechaun magic
Was bestowed on her one night,
As she ran to meet her lover,
Heart filled with delight.

Lights from the emerald castle
Shown down upon the ground;
Yet she didn't see the branches
That caused her to fall down

Into the mighty river Shannon,
No hope of being rescued from death;
But her lover saw her falling
And it took away his breath!

Into the mighty currents
Her lover went to save
The fair young maid he adored
From a dark watery grave.

The force of water was so strong
That neither had a chance -
Until the leprechaun
Interrupted his fine dance!

With a blast of Irish blarney
He swore the two he'd save;
With a puff of dust and shamrocks
All his magic tricks he gave.

Being just one leprechaun
He could not save both of them;
The fair maid was transported home,
Her lover never seen again.

As twinkling stars light up the sky
The fair young maiden weeps;
For somewhere in the river Shannon
Her own true lover sleeps.

Now the leprechaun visits her
And brings her pretty flowers;
Stays to pass the time away,
Oh, so many lonely hours.
