You left me holding my heart
With an adoring smile eager to please,
you silently removed the wooden box
from its resting place on the shelf.

You blew off the inches of dust upon it
carefully opened the lid seeing what's there.
Curiously you pulled out what lay inside.

A lonely golden necklace revealing
a broken, damaged and unloved heart
That lay there no longer beating.

You gladly jumped at this opportunity
to be the next to place it around my neck,
leaving the broken heart to rest upon my chest.

With every conversation we shared
My heart seemed to start beating,
Once again singing a lovers' tune.

Happiness danced all through my heart
and I knew I was starting to fall in love-
the overwhelming emotions went soaring.

Then like so many others before you,
You found your true love elsewhere
and left me with an aching heart.

So sadly I take it off again today,
placing it back into its wooden box;
I never want to feel this way, again.
