THE PATRIOT

The patriot stood silently and
Looked out the window to the street below;
Saw the young men gather, carrying their guns.
With a heavy sigh, he turned to go.

He knew the toll would be too high;
Yet freedom was depending on each one
To fight the good fight, to live or die,
And they rode out with the setting sun.

The year was 1776, a window
Opened into the past -
And today, in 2003, it seems
That war may always last.

The patriot stands silently
Sighs a heavy sigh, it is meant to be.
Looking out the window once more
Sees the young men marching off to war.

Then the sound of planes is heard;
The sound of bombs cuts off the words
As he shouts to the men to take cover,
Much too late, he will discover

That in the future in a window stands
A patriot who, with a heavy sigh,
Will turn away to join his men
Who fight for freedom, to live or die.
