SHIPWRECK

It was nearing midnight
When they saw the lights off shore;
Far off in the distance
As the rain began to pour.

The ocean showed its anger
With waves so huge and black,
They wondered if they
Would ever make it back.

The ship tossed and turned
And all were wet with rain;
The lighthouse on the shore
Flickered as a glowing flame.

The captain turned the ship
Heading for the shore
As waves black as midnight
Pounded harder, more and more.

So close to land they were
When the ship hit the reef,
And mothers of many men
Would soon feel the grief.

Broken up and tossed about,
Swallowed by the foam;
At the stroke of midnight
The ocean claimed its' own.
