MAMA'S NEW COAT

It was our mama's birthday;
I can remember it so well
For we children got together
To get her something really swell.

We each put in a share of dollars
Until we had just the right amount,
So many nickels, dimes and quarters
That it was really hard to count!

We went down to the store
And looked for a new coat,
Mama's old coat was threadbare,
A new one was her fondest hope.

We gave the clerk all our money
And watched as she wrapped the fur
In the prettiest of tissue;
We knew it would please her!

When mama got the present open,
Very much to our surprise,
She touched the fur with loving hands
And tears came to her eyes.

"This fur came from God's creatures,
And was meant for them alone" she said;
"I can never wear this lovely fur,
Knowing the dear animals are dead."

So mama's gift went back to the store,
Where we picked out a lovely coat of blue;
Our mama wore that coat with pride
And we all learned a lesson, too.

Mama loved all God's creatures
And she'd stroke their shiney fur;
With a loving heart she cared for them
As God, Himself, smiled down on her.
