A LASTING LOVE

For forty years I did the wash
And cooked his meals and then
Sit in front of the fireplace
Asking how his day had been.

He'd always smile and tell me
That the day had been just fine,
That coming home to see his bride
Was the best thing, any time.

Memories locked inside my heart
Come unbidden as I lay
A single rose upon his grave;
He's been so long away.

A strand of silvery hair
Falls across my eyes, and I
Get up and hurry home again
Not really knowing why.

It just seems he is there,
Close as we've always been;
The presence of a lasting love
Comes back to me again.
