August 2004 - Issue #5 - Writing for children is not as easy as what you think!

*Star* Welcome to the Childrens Writer Newsletter! *Star*

Writing for children is no easy task. It not only takes a bit of talent, but a lot of hard work. We, as adults, need to understand how the child's mind works, learn their likes and dislikes, and get to know our subject matter inside out. It's not something everyone can do. Patience, determination, and a love of writing for kids are definite assets in this field. And the children are our best resource.

"But my niece and nephew are all grown up," someone moans.

"I don't even have kids yet!" another voice exclaims.

That’s no excuse. *Laugh* Children are everywhere. Walk around the mall, go to the beach, camp at a park, volunteer at an elementary school, (ok, here’s my favorite…)… VISIT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY! (for those of you that don’t know me well, I am a librarian in a teeny, tiny library. *Bigsmile*) And so importantly, listen to what the children are saying! Watch how they interact with others. How do they react to certain situations?

Alright, so you don’t have time to be following kids around all day. At least go to a library and check out as many books as the nice librarian will allow you to. Take home a variety of picture books, easy readers, poem collections, chapter books, whatever you can find. It will be a blast, I promise!

And if you don’t have time to do that? Turn the TV on and pay attention to what kids are watching. You may or may not like it, but perhaps it will spark an idea.
