RAGING WATERS

The rain had continued to fall
Throughout the week as I recall;
The rivers rose and soon would crest,
Putting endurance to the test.

I saw a deer in deep distress,
Fighting the current, and I guess
The force of the water took it away,
Never again to run free or play.

The water rose and took the shed,
Leaving me with a feeling of dread;
I grabbed my coat and hurried so,
Toward the barn, 'twas next to go!

Getting the animals to higher ground
Was quite a task with no one around;
But I saved the cow and the little colt,
The mare was frightened, began to bolt.

I grabbed her halter and led her on,
By now the barn was almost gone;
And the raging waters no mercy gave,
All too soon became a watery grave.

I watched in horror as a lamb was lost,
A precious pet, God knows the cost!
Up on the hillside I watched the river,
Chilled to the bone, began to shiver...

How many hours I sat there alone,
Crying, laughing, sometimes a moan;
Then a shout from a distance and I see
Two of my neighbors, John and Bea.

It's been five years since that day,
When the waters rose and tore away
Dreams of a having a family of my own,
Winds dried up the dreams, I was alone.

I moved to the mountains, north of here,
And each morning I watch for the deer
As they feed and run, wild and free,
With no raging waters anywhere near me!

I built a new home and got me a wife;
Seems more peaceful, my new kind of life.
It's only at night when it starts to rain
The memories come to cause more pain.

In the morning light, the early dawn
Reminds me again that life goes on -
The past is past, all said and done;
A second chance at life I've now won.
