Poem about the sunlight watching over me when I was in darkness.
For my grandparents~

The Light Is Watching

An empty road embraced my darkness,
It swallowed me whole, savoring my misery.
The wind kissed my cheeks with icy lips;
I stopped.

In the shadow of trees.
Monsters they were.
Older than me,
older than time itself,
together wind and tree screamed
against the day.

Round leaves trembled
struggling to shatter the sun.
Black branches raised gnarled fingers
against the light.

Yet the light slipped by
yearned to dry my tears
to lift my reddened cheeks
to draw a smile
from my darkness
with a blinding ray.

Author's Note: This poem was indeed inspired by that copse of trees along a country road in Oklahoma. I was down that day, walking along in sadness, when the sunlight reminded me to do otherwise. I like to think it was the spirit of those who were gone from that place, for it was them that I missed that day.
