What was that noise?
Christmas Fears
By Terry Burres

It's Christmas again!
It's practically here!
The Day that I've waited
For all through the year.

The stockings are hung.
There's lights on the tree.
We're waiting for Santa,
Just my brother and me.

I get so excited
I hardly can wait!
I hardly can eat
Any food on my plate.

At last it's time
To go off to bed!
I lay very still
Sheets over my head.

With only an ear out
In case of a surprise,
Under the sheets
I hardly close my eyes.

Then suddenly I hear
A soft tinkeling bell.
Where does it come from?
I think I can tell.

I stop all my breathing.
I don't move an inch.
I really do hope
That it isn't a grinch.

After a long, long time
When everything's been still
I pull down the covers
And look at my brother Bill.

All cozy and warm under
Covers he sleeps.
Never knowing down
The chimney Santa has creeped.

I slowly get up to
Tell Mommy and Dad
They better go see,
Maybe Bill's been too bad.

Are there any presents
Out under the tree?
Maybe I'd better have
Them look for presents for me.

My Dad's not real happy
To hear of my plan
Of checking up on
That Dear Old Man.

He Says,"Go back to bed.
It's to early yet son.
And Don't get back up
Until the night is done.”

So here I lay in my bed
With jittery excited feelings.
Just laying here silently
Counting cracks in the ceiling.
