My first attempt at an elegy on the death of an old version of one’s self.
Oh to mourn thyself
is to watch an old version of you
succumb to its death.
The you of your past
no longer viable
for you have changed.
An exquisite loss of identity
to shed your skin
and start anew.

Oh to mourn thyself
is to watch the old version of you
turn to ashes.
The you of your past
on its last breath
for you have changed.
Coming to terms with the passing
of a former life
is to expose vulnerabilities.

There is grief in the loss of yourself.
There is hope in starting over.
