PROMPT January 20th

Imagine you have to describe your family to someone who’s never met them before. What makes your family unique and different from others? What are your family’s most important traditions, values, and stories?

This prompt made me laugh. I expect everyone thinks their family is unique. Well we all are. There are no families without the odd bod or two within their ranks.

As for traditions we don’t really have any. Everyone seems to do their own thing. Christmases change depending on what seems a good idea on a particular year. I actually like that. I’m not one for being locked in to, “ but this is how we’ve always done it!”

I suppose I spoiled any traditions we may have had in my childhood family, by emigrating, taking the only grandchild with us. As new immigrants we, my husband, John, three year old daughter and myself had to start a new type of tradition. Of course, instead of snow and ice, our first Christmas was in the heat of summer in our new country. We watched how the Australians did Christmas and followed suit.
I think the family I left behind still do the same old thing though.
The family we have now, that’s my three adult kids, five grandkids and five great grandchildren mix things up. I actually can’t think of a tradition we follow.
We have many characters, some with “issues,” some super smart, some on the spectrum. Although we’re all on the spectrum somewhere I suppose.
If I had to actually come up with a trait that runs throughout the family, it is honesty to the point of bluntness. Things are said which maybe shouldn’t have been, but are taken, pondered upon and usually forgiven. Introduced members of this family are often astounded at the openness we have. There are no forbidden subjects to be spoken about. Sometimes as the matriarch I get told stuff I wish they didn’t tell me.😱
I think on the whole we all tolerate each other’s idiosyncrasies.
