Day 3042--March 19, 2024

Prompt: Fear
“Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up.”
Veronica Roth, Divergent
What makes you afraid and how do you handle fear?

I’ll try to list my fears.
1. Fear of suffocation
2.Choking. Either myself or others, especially babies.
3. Deep ocean. That’s the fear of the unknown I suppose. Not knowing what is about to take a bite out of my leg at any second.
4.Being swept out to sea and drowning.
5. Anything terrible happening to anyone I love. Such as, illness, accidents and any of the above list.
6. Not having control of situations, such as being in hospital and anesthetics.
7. My partner dying and leaving me alone
8. The death of my dog.
9. Dying a protracted death in pain.
10. Pain.

How do I handle fear? Usually in the past I’d try not to overthink and just DO IT!
I have done many of the things which could have led to the above list.
I’ve scuba dived in deep water.
I’ve abseiled off a cliff.
I’ve fed many babies and dealt with many choking incidents.
I’ve been in a few road accidents
I’ve had serious surgeries
I’ve gone through many dog deaths.

What am I not afraid of?
Death.
Heights.
House fires.

Prompt: Luck
Since it was St. Patrick's Day, yesterday, what do you think of the lucky Irish? Or if you wish, write your thoughts on the theme of luck and how it has played a role in your life.

I don’t really believe in luck. Having said that, I do believe that I’ve been fortunate throughout my life. Having parents who stayed together had a big part to play in my happiness as a child. My parents always loved each other dearly and having two people who love each other and who brought happiness to the household was good for the children of that marriage . Therefore I knew what a happy marriage looked like and consequently I’ve attempted to replicate my parents relationship and have a happy home.
It’s not always been easy though, we’ve had to work at marriage often. But our three kids all have said they’d had a happy childhood. Luck? I don’t know.
We both worked in the horse racing arena and gambling. The people we mixed with all took luck very seriously. But having seen the heartache gambling can bring we steered right away from it. Luck has nothing to do with winning or losing.
Health wise. I look around at other eighty year olds and think that maybe we both have been lucky. Although I’ve had more than my fair share of ill health and still do, we at least can go for a walk with the dog each morning.
Yes, I have seen people who seem to have terrible luck throughout their lives with all manner of things. Accidents, misfortunes from flooding or fires, illness etc. One does wonder why they seem to attract bad luck or is it simply a numbers game?

Use these words in your blog today: mixture, character, marble, division, basketball, expertise, and role.

Well, today’s words are certainly a mixture! My role today is to put them into a paragraph or two which will make some sort of interesting reading.

I could tell you about the endless, might I even say boring hours of watching various children and grandchildren attempt to master the sport of basketball. I don’t believe any of them rose from out of the bottom division, yet my role was to cheer from the sidelines. but I’m sorry to report none of them had the expertise needed to ever be the champions they aspired to be.
Look, I’m no sportswoman myself, the only game I enjoyed was playing marbles when I was a kid. I was a character in my own stories which I started to write even as a small child. I’d write about the tournaments which lasted for hours with myself as the conquering victor.
I’d return home having beaten the other kids, winning their best marble, the big one. Any marble larger than the majority would be termed a boulder, bonker, masher, plumper, popper, shooter, thumper, smasher, bumbo, crock, bumboozer, bowler, tonk, tronk, godfather, tom bowler, fourer, giant, dobber, dobbert, or biggie.

Use these fun words in your entry today: learn, quarrel, register, barrier, pan, night, stock, scream, and me.

I have no quarrel with people who feel strongly about climate change enough protest. But instead of registering their concerns so as to not upset or inconvenience people going about their business, they form a barrier on highways preventing traffic from moving for hours.
A young mother about to give birth was forced to do so on the side of the road because she was unable to get to the hospital. Her scream of anguish still didn’t make the protesters clear the road.
If it was up to me, I’d make the penalties greater than they are when groups such as Extinction Rebellion cause harm or sometimes even death to innocent citizens trying to go about their business.
I think these groups need to learn their actions are hurting others and although everyone knows they are doing their protesting to get the attention of the government and do so coming from a good place, could they sleep soundly at night if their actions caused the deaths of a mother and her baby?
They ought to take stock and reconsider their actions. There has to be a better way to help the earth other than causing even more stress to the overworked, underpaid citizens who are trying to get by day to day.
Climate change is a problem for the world. There are few now who don’t believe and governments all over the world are attempting to lower emissions caused by human behaviours.
When one thinks of the great highways around the world such as The Pan-American Highway a network of roads stretching across the Americas, measuring about 30,000 kilometres (19,000 mi) in total length. How can groups such as Extinction Rebellion hope to make a difference to the damage human beings are causing?

Who celebrates Pi Day? Every year on March 14, math fanatics and food lovers unite to celebrate Pi Day, a holiday that's dedicated to the lengthy mathematical number that most people abbreviate to 3. 14.. What's your favorite pie? Do you bake them yourself? Or go for the premade pies at the store?

When I first saw the prompt I was ready to run for the hills! Maths? My worst subject.
But pie, now we’re talking. I used to make pies all the time when the family were home but now it’s just the two of us I can’t be bothered. I actually purchased my first store bought apple pie ever in my whole life last week. I felt a twinge of guilt which lasted all of one second.
I think now “do we need all that pastry anyway?” The answer is definitely not.
I often make crumbles. Apple/plum/rhubarb are my favourite. The topping is a healthier choice and often contains oats, butter, maybe some dried fruit. Custard or cream is a must but if on a health kick plain yogurt can be good too.

Prompt: It is easier to solve other people's problems because you aren't emotionally involved. Write about this in your Blog entry today.

I agree with the sentiment of the prompt wholeheartedly. It’s that dreadful churning in the stomach and the constant going over and over a problem in the mind that can stop one from finding a solution to a problem. Being unaffected personally by those feelings and worries makes finding solutions to other’s problems easier.
You may advise a person to seek a confrontational conversation with someone who may be causing their worries, but then ant the end of the day its not you who has to face that challenge, and that is far easier said than done. Or you may come out with the usual platitudes such as ‘this too will pass,’ or ‘it’s always darkest before the dawn.’ Both of which I’ve found myself saying this week!
They were my mother’s sayings by the way.🤔
I’ve learned to try not to give advice but sometimes it’s difficult, but I have found it’s not usually advice people are seeking, more of a sounding board to bounce their problems off.
Counselling is an art. A counsellor never gives advice, just listen, reflects back, until the client realises themselves what needs to be done.
And when all’s said and done, who listens to advice anyway?

Prompt: Scammers
What do you think about the scammers of today with all the media available to them? Do you think they only target the elderly or is everyone liable to fall for their scams? And should scamming be made a serious offense since most of it is a misdemeanor at this time?

The word Scam was one rarely used years ago. Of course there were always scammers but rarely would it be anything huge and certainly not to the extent of ripping off someone’s life savings. Perhaps at the most it would have been a snake oil sales man who sold a potion purporting to cure all ills, when of course it would be little more than coloured water.
No, today the scammers are people with no consciences. They care little for the devastation their actions cause, especially when they carry out romance scams which fool women and sometimes men into believing they are someone they’re not. They keep up the pretence for months, even years, until they make this person believe and trust them. Of course we all have heard of the terrible heartaches caused, the loss of life savings as well as being never able to trust anyone ever again.
The upshot of all this deception and lies is we as a people no longer trust. Having to be forever on guard and vigilant has hidden consequences and I don’t think we know yet the impact this will have on society. The banks have a lot to answer for in many cases and until they get punished for letting the scammers take money things won’t change. They insist we use on line banking whilst closing branches and then when there’s trouble they wash their hands of it.

Use these words in your entry today: literature, reason, coma, half, go, curl and determine.

When we speak of literature people’s thoughts may go immediately to the great writers and poets. But literature covers so many things. There’s low brow, pulp fiction, comics and newspapers, it’s all literature. Some say they never read. Of course that’s not true. It can’t be. Everyone has a reason to read. The contents of a bottle or can, or the ingredients needed for a recipe. It would be terrible not to be able to read for some reason.I know there are many who struggle to read and I have volunteered to assist people with reading, which I found to be very satisfying. There’s nothing nicer than to curl up with a good book on a cold rainy day. Or at night in bed, before slipping into a sleepy coma, to read a few chapters. I often determine I will read more books, as all writers should, but half my reading time is taken up with WdC!

Use these random words in your entry: tactic, soak, cow, issue, tax, heavy, and strong.

On my daily walk I often see a cow, in fact two cows now she’s had her calf. We don’t live anywhere near a farm; we live in bush where there’s little to no grass in the summer. When this neighbour bought the cow, I thought it wouldn’t be happy or have enough to eat. Yet I’ve been proved wrong, she has no issue at all with her surroundings, she loves it in her orchard along with her friend the white horse and has since given birth to a cute calf which is now getting heavy and strong. She is happier though in the winter when some grass grows amongst the trees and the rain can soak the ground, which must be better for her hoofs. I did wonder if the neighbour had decided to purchase the cow as some kind of tactic to avoid paying land tax on a vacant piece of land, declaring it as being used for farming. Who knows? But the sight each day of her big brown eyes when she comes to the fence with her horsey friend brightens my walk.
