Who made the peace symbol and what does it mean?

The modern peace sign was designed by Gerald Holtom for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in 1958. The vertical line in the center represents the flag semaphore signal for the letter D (Disarmament), and the downward lines on either side represent the semaphore signal for the letter N (Nuclear) as used in the semaphore. The letters represented the idea of a person with arms lowered and outstretched as if calling for peace.

I had a wonderful necklace that was close to a choker style. The peace symbol was embossed on a silver surface. I checked my jewelry box. It is not there. I remember wearing it every day for a couple of years during Vietnam. I wore an MIA bracelet as well.
