TREASURE OF THE DAY

Chestnuts roasting in the microwave
Thirty seconds and they’re done
Yuletide carols being played on CD
And folks buying presents on the run
No one’s having fun

Yes, I know it's past the Christmas, Xmas, or whatever you call the Buy-Me season. But this little ditty makes a point or two, poking fun at the well known song and how this society has changed in celebrating what originally was a Holy Day. What I like about it is that I know the tune and can sing these words with it. A delicious parody that is quite tasty out of season.

after vespers, 38 degrees. 42 in Washington, DC.

Got a wonderful letter from my Bolivian friend, Gastón Araoz. He's doing well in Washington and praying that things work out well in Bolivia.

All of a sudden, my blog is being read! 1,024 views at the moment. As I told Nada, I need to work on it to make it better. I've seen and read better. I think there is a way to include photographs, for instance. That would be nice. Especially if I were travelling. Odd thought since I haven't been anywhere in a year!

afternoon, 44 degrees. 81 in Naples, FL.

Did I make a mistake by not leaving for Florida? Don't know. Guess I still could. Less happy here by the minute some days. Time to go out in the sun!

Read parts of an old lecture/talk by Noam Chomsky in 1970. Scary how the present mess was foreseen by him. The good old U.S.A. always needs an enemy to keep the people under control doesn't it? As any empire does.

noon and 34 degrees. 47 in Seattle, WA.

Here it is gray. In Seattle it is gray also. Bet they are having a better party in Seattle, ya think?

Every place has good people. Just spoke with Nestlihan ( a stunningly beautiful young woman from Turkey with sparkling personality) and Jon (who has a warm heart and smile).

morning, 32 degrees. 46 in Port Townsend, WA.

Jessica just called to say my car has a flat tire. I'm not happy. I've had 8 slashed tires in this town. Hope it wasn't that.

OVERHEARD

"As I become one with the shadow, I shall not fear," Brian Kummer, who also gave us "pitter patter winkle."

Well, my mother got her Seattle - Pittsburgh Super Bowl. Who would've thunk it? I thought Indy had the horses.

No word quite yet on school here, there or elsewhere. I see that the temps are mild in Port Townsend and there is an artist's community there. Wonder what it would be like to actually live in such a place, près de la mer. I don't care much for water. It deepens my depression as does thinking in French. Peut-être? I must make decisions before I am ready, with no resources and no support.

My peace is fragile. The calm of yesterday, the tranquil peal of the bells, the youth playing on the field before young Fraser Hall, has been shattered. It isn't easy to live without options.

Sketched on the 8th of January:

Mercedes

I

Could I leave my Mercedes at your place?
My laptop, leather gloves and Gucci briefcase?
It wouldn't be forever.
Just a moment till my ship comes in
from cruising through the Caribbean
crocodiles along the Mosquito Coast
of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá.
Hats off to you,
you are so kind!
I'll pick them up next month or year.
Here are the keys.
My dear, go take a spin top down.
And if it snows?
Topdown for sure!

II

Only those who
know themselves,
embrace themselves,
and love themselves,
can ever hope to own themselves
and drive my car.

For those who don't know, I have an old Volvo. Once, had a Miata. Never had a Mercedes.
