Birth of St. Helen and Ranier

And I, Juan de Fuca,
remnant of Great Farallon,
bow before your bottled gas,
then plunge my mafic mass
into your depths,
until our felsic froth arises
heated rhyolitic spume
that bursts forth from twin peaks.
Not weak I plunge again, again,
until this Age shall end:
me spent upon your shores;
you rising ever higher towards the sun.

John Lee and I were talking about the plate tectonics of the Western United States. So I had to write something again with terms Geologists use:

Juan de Fuca - part of oceanic crustal plate being drawn beneath North America.
Farallon - name for huge oceanic plate that North America has consumed.
mafic - dark dense igneous (volcanic) rocks (like basalts and gabbros)
felsic - lighter less dense volcanic rocks
rhyolite - a type of light felsic rock from an explosive event (lots of volatiles)
St. Helen and Ranier - volcanoes in Washington State that have been created by this process.

My life

I did not leave the apartment until after sunset. It was much cooler today. I don't think it got to 70, so I had a very peaceful nap. Just hearing the voice of a friend this morning banished the nightmares of the last two days.

Can't go out though without running into friends: Carol Pilante at Tellers; Danny, Xoan, Xose at Henry's; John at Aimee's.

I've been reading the Victorian mystery, Death at Glamis Castle

I'm thinking about starting a contest where I ask for nominations for the Best Blogger in these categories:

1. Most humorous (as in funny) or whacko (as in bizarre)
2. Most supportive of community (Blogville)
3. Best centered on writing (as in poetry, poetics, story-lines, Nanowrimo, advice)
4. Most intelligent (journalistic, thoughtful, philosophical, rational, essay)
5. Most confessional-inspirational (personal life stories)

Who would you nominate?
