Mourning Dove

At first, we thought her wings were snapped.
She did not fly at our approach
but sat stock still and pecked
in the dust of our roses.
We dialed our local wildlife rescue.
But after a time, she rose to the sky
like the Pleiades escaping Orion.
She did not leave behind a treasure,
like the Neolithic Nebra sky disc,
just a feather.

Author's Note: Mourning doves are associated with the Pleiades constellation which is depicted in the Nebra sky disc, the oldest known depiction of astronomical phenomena. Do a google search, it's fun!
