Writing An Unsentimental Love Poem
Friday, February 24, 2017

I want an unsentimental love poem
that isn't drunk with the taste of power
or the stench of control.

The "Blog City ~ Every Blogger's Paradise DAY 1080
Writing an unsentimental love poem or short story can be one of the more difficult endeavors a writer can take on, whether the subject of that poem/ short story is a lover, a family member, or friend. Taking inspiration from the popular film 10 Things I Hate About You, a modern retelling of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, write an ode to the aspects of a loved one that downright irk you. How might you use a form of repetition in your poem/ story--like an anaphora or refrain--to build tension and showcase either the unlikable or admirable aspects of this person? Let those creative juices go!

Writing An Unsentimental Love Poem

I don't think I can write an unsentimental love poem, at least not today. I can write bitter love poems, but those are the same as unsentimental poems because bitterness is a sentiment. It's been a rather stressful week. My life has begun to change. A change for the better (I think). At least I'm going to accept it as a change for the better because I am removing a lot of past storm debris from my life. This means that my vain imaginings are working overtime about what might happen, but will probably never happen, once the debris are removed and burned or returned to the ocean. I tend to worry about worst-case scenarios which is pure vain imagination because cases like the seldom if ever happen.

An unsentimental love poem
isn't a bitter love poem,
it isn't an angry love poem
because both bitterness and anger
are emotions...
and emotions are sentiments.

Ia an unsentimental love poem
a dysfunctional love poem?
I don't think so
because dysfunctional love
is the results
of inappropriate expressions of emotions,
unadmitted anger,
dishonesty with self
or fear of showing love
because of past hurts.
