Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

I really like this. Strong images, especially:

vestments = seaweed
liturgy = whale song
commandments = guided drift (although I read it as 'gilded')

Unsolicited advice: cut the use of 'the' and 'are' and 'will'.

At the end I'd read it as "water's life. / water. is. life."

I grew up with the song but didn't remember the second verse.

Thank you. The ghost orchid is a tiny, rare orchid that I believe only grows in Florida in the Fakahatchee Swamp. Poachers try to steal it as it was once believed that consuming it caused euphoria. It likely grows in other swampy areas. There was a book and a movie called Adaptation, I believe, about it. It seemed fitting for this poem.

I like this better than some other efforts I've seen. The line breaks seem natural. Great use of imagery.

As for the moon... thin sliver of a waning crescent today, the 11th. New moon tomorrow. I've seen the moon during the day this past month. I don't remember seeing it as such when I was growing up. But then... I wonder whether the soot from the steel factories would have been an issue.

I like your choice of words, especially 'inky' and 'swamp' (a place). 'Ghost orchid' is a great image that reminds me of the white orchid (phalaenopsis?) blooming in our courtyard. I've posted pictures on bookface.

The Grey Between

Today the sea
is grey between
shore and sky.
Brushed nickel clouds
reflected in pearled silver waves.
They say there are colors
in the Bardo
though no anecdotal evidence exists.
Purgatory is Stonehenge greige.
Souls in limbo,
heavier than a feather
waiting for release
by forgiving gods.
In the ICU
all colors are fogged,
minds and bodies
in suspended state.
I came to the beach to pray.
I remembered
we all swim
in thin black ice.

Dark Goddess Tarot--Eight of Water--Sedna--Inuit Goddess of the Ocean and the Underworld--Going deep is not easy. Let it be worthwhile.
