I pull a card...if it doesn't speak to me...perhaps it was meant for you? How to Read the Tarot Begin by brewing a cup of tea, a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile, this is after all, your future. A reading at the dark of the moon is best, before the night creatures crawl and bad humours fill the air. Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif, and no reversals. Hold a question in your heart, shuffle the cards and place them on the table. Choose only two. Like the ancient Israelites, these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm, black and white, yes or no. Isn't that all you were asking? |
After the Apocalypse After the Apocalypse I will be a different woman. I will be in limbo with a Kali necklace of skulls and a newly sharpened blade. There will be nowhere safe to enfold myself. Images of caged children will still rattle in my brain. I will hear the ring of one last grasp of a failing democracy. The pit in my soul will understand the shell game of politicians. All my leaves will have withered and grayed, though a fiery center remains. The apocalypse is now. Dark Goddess Tarot--XVI--Kali--Destruction--All the world changes |
Rosary My youngest grandchild is six today. Meanwhile stormtroopers are ripping rosaries from the hands of small children. When I was a child, my mother lulled us to sleep with "Hail Mary's" on AM radio. I am a bad Catholic. When in pain and doubt that happens more often as I grow old I still murmur aves to that holy woman. I pray that her healing mantle covers all the little ones. I will say a cosmic rosary. Tarot of the Saints--XVIII--Mother Mary--Grace, love, forgiveness |
Requiem for a Friend They called to tell me you were gone. Tower Time comes for us all whether early or late, alone or in a crowd. Always, our first commandment must be to do no harm, treat others as ourselves. With each breath we must pass the sweet honey along till our final shot and the last note of the fiddle plays. Tarot of the Crone--XVI--Tower--The Mother of Madness---Speak what you hold behind your teeth. |
Father's Day Promote anarchy among all your grandchildren tell them all the truths that didn't show up for you pass the sweet honey along Tanka 5 lines Dark Goddess Tarot--Siren of Air--Lilith--Babylonian Goddess of Darkness--Be seduced by the strange to grow your mind. |

The Grey Between Today the sea is grey between shore and sky. Brushed nickel clouds reflected in pearled silver waves. They say there are colors in the Bardo though no anecdotal evidence exists. Purgatory is Stonehenge greige. Souls in limbo, heavier than a feather waiting for release by forgiving gods. In the ICU all colors are fogged, minds and bodies in suspended state. I came to the beach to pray. I remembered we all swim in thin black ice. Dark Goddess Tarot--Eight of Water--Sedna--Inuit Goddess of the Ocean and the Underworld--Going deep is not easy. Let it be worthwhile. |
Going back to work tomorrow. Not likely a daily offering will be possible. Finishing up cycling through the Dark Goddess Tarot. Next I believe I will work with the Tarot of the Crone or perhaps the Gnostic Tarot of the Saints. Dark Goddess Tarot--Four of Air--Nut--Egypitian Goddess of the Night Sky--Until the dawn rest as a star in my body. |
The Lady is a Trucker She pulls off the neon leapfrog green driving gloves, snuffs out her Gauloises and parks her black licorice barque of a truck at the roadside. Eight hours to Dayton, to family, to laughter . to a daughter growing too fast. The backyard beer garden smells of cut grass. Mason jars of wildflowers stand sentinel on the groaning boards. She is hoping for some smooth jazz and even smoother whiskey. She listens, breathes, digs her feet in this sacred earth. Her spirit lives here. In the morning she drills, pulls on her jeans, adjusts the ballerina pink belt, with a buckle, that says, "Queen of the Road" sets off again. And though the sky is falling, she turns the key. Dark Goddess Tarot--V--Hierophant--Cybele--Anatolian Mountain Mother--Transcend boundaries through community |
End You thought you knew me. No good-bye, only silence. Friendship imploded. Dark Goddess Tarot---XV--Corruption--Tlazolteotl--Aztec Goddess of Filth and Purification--Old wounds ache. Do not let them dominate the present. |
Friend She sends me pressed flowers folded in tissue for no reason at all. Crazy yellow, purple pansies, and violets from our holy earth. Golden spirals of logarithmic growth like the arms of galaxies and hurricane bands. And so our friendship moves inward, outward, forward and back never ceasing. The sigh of saints rasping for breath. I pay the petals forward. 15 lines Dark Goddess Tarot--XX-Liberation--Persephone--Greek Goddess of Resurrection |
