The woods were quiet and peaceful; the slight breeze made the leaves rattle in harmony with the birds singing.  I had escaped into the solitude away from the hustle and bustle of the ranch. Everyone was preparing for the big Valentine’s Day barn dance and sometimes I just need to clear my head.  The wild flowers bloomed and the fragrance was strong in the air as I melted into the peaceful dark of the forest.

I heard him before I saw him.  Josh said he lived nearby but I knew all of the neighbors and I didn’t know where he could have come from.  But still, I was startled when he appeared out of nowhere in front of me.  He had been on my mind every moment since I had met him the month before and yet I didn’t see him anywhere but here.

“Josh, you surprised me,” I said jumping back.

“I didn’t mean to do that Sarah,” Josh said in return, “I knew you would come today.”

“Oh yeah and how did you know that?”

“I can hear your thoughts,” He smiled that mysterious smile as he talked, “didn’t expect that did ya?”

“Yeah, read my thoughts! You are funny.”  I smiled back at him wondering where he truly lived.

“I live nearby, I told you that,” he said matter-of-factly.  I looked at him incredulously, “What?  I told you I can read your mind.”

“Well where nearby,” I asked.  “I just want to know why it is every time I walk in the woods now days you are here.  My house is right there and the nearest farm is miles away.  I just want to know where you come from.”

“You will know in time where I live, I have to go soon it will be dark and I cannot be with you when it gets dark” He looked around as though he was worried about someone seeing us together. “You should go soon too.”

“What if I don’t want to go?  I like walking in the dark.”  I was put off by the fact that this handsome stranger liked to order me around.

“It is dangerous so far from the house this time of day.  Please just listen to me.”  He kissed me quickly then turned to go, and I watched as he started to move off into the deep of the woods.

“I will think about it!” I sassed as he disappeared into the darkening night.

As I looked back over my shoulder I thought I could see the eyes peering out of the dark at me.  As I walked towards the ranch I wondered again where Josh came from and why I only saw him here at the edge of the dark forest at dusk.
