What does your reflection in the mirror tell you?
What cause do you feel strongly about? How can you help?
Do you react well in a crisis?
What is your most treasured possession and why?
What can’t you live without?
Do you have fears of abandonment? Why could this be?
What one thing would you change about your childhood?
If you could go back to when you were a child, what would you say to yourself?
What were the good things you remember from your childhood?
What is your biggest regret?
What was the best birthday you ever had?
What did you want to be when you were younger?
What is your happiest memory?
What family traditions did you have as a child?
Where were you, 10 years, 5 years, and 1 year ago?
What mistakes have you learned from in the past?
What time in your life do you always want to remember?
What song holds special memories for you?
What is your saddest memory?
What has been the most difficult time in your life?
If you could relive one day over again, what day would it be?
What has been the best year of your life?
Who was your biggest influence growing up?
Has your family life changed since you were a child?
What was your favorite thing to do as a child?
Have you said anything in the past that you wish you hadn’t?
Did you enjoy school? What life lessons did you learn from your time there?
Did you find it easy to get along with your peers when you were growing up?
Did you ever experience bullying? How did you deal with this?
What from your past do you wish you could do for a do-over?
Have any past experiences shaped the fears and anxieties you have today?
What has been the most challenging part of your life to date?
During your childhood did you ever feel let down by an adult?
What were you doing this time last year?
Did you ever witness anything in the past that you wish you hadn’t?
What smell brings about good memories?
What was your favorite family vacation?
Were there secrets in your family? How did that affect you?
Does the way you were brought up influence the way you (will) bring up your children?
If you have siblings, how is your relationship with them? Has it changed now that you are an adult?
What do you believe you deserve in life?
What one thing have you always wished for?
What skill have you always wanted to have?
What would you like to achieve in the next year?
What new hobbies would you like to try?
Where would you like to travel?
How could your life be better?
Is anything holding you back?
What are your goals for this month?
Is your life what you imagined it would be?
What small change would you like to make to your life?
What big change would you like to make to your life?
What is your dream job?
What is your vision for the future? How will you get there?
What gives you hope?
What do you fear most about the future?
Does growing old scare you?
You have decided to emigrate, where are you going to live?
What do you want most out of life?
What one thing could you do today to help you achieve your goals?

What cause do you feel strongly about? How can you help?

There are few things that annoy me more than littering. I know, that out of all the troubles in the world this should bother me so much sounds ridiculous. However, it’s just not too much to ask. Is it? Take your s*** home. How anyone can simply throw cans, bottles and take out food containers out of car windows, astounds me.
What can I do about it? Well I do what I can each day on my walks with the dog. I pick others crap up and place it in a rubbish bin. Australia on the whole is a clean and tidy country compared to places in South East Asia. The state of the waterways in these countries is shocking. Plastic bags suffocate the rivers and the oceans. We are drowning our world in plastic. We are even becoming part plastic ourselves. We have nano particles of plastic in our bloodstreams. It’s horrifyingly bad.

Have any past experiences shaped the fears and anxieties you have today?

Of course past experiences have to change a person and I’m sure I’m no exception. By the time you get to my age nothing is very surprising any more, I seem to know the outcome, even though it may seem unlikely, given enough time things always turn out as I thought they would.
Whether to trust? I suppose that is the thing that has shaped me today. I’m actually quite trusting but always cautious, having been let down by so called friends in the past. Actually I’m not a great friend, I don’t think. I have only ever needed one good friend even at school. Nowadays I like to talk and associate with people in groups never really committing to friendship.
I know that bad things can happen in an instance. Things that can turn your life upside down before you know it. I think that’s the reason I’m thankful for my days. Simple things are just the best and I appreciate my good fortune to be in a particular place when there is a lovely sunset or just watching the river flow with the sunlight shining on it.
I worry of course that anything awful will happen to any of my family but I try not to get to caught up in “ what if’s “.
The biggest thing to face is dying. We can probably count on two hands the time we have left, if we’re lucky. The thought of my husband dying before me is awful. I don’t think that will be the case though, he’s very fit as am I. So we’ve made a pact that neither of us is going anywhere!

What was your favorite thing to do as a child?

I was an only girl with two older brothers so I was dragged into many football and cricket games. But that wasn’t my favourite thing to do. That was drawing or writing stories or dancing by myself, living in my imagination. I wonder if I’m still like that even now. I seem to spend time thinking , not quite in this world. I think that’s why when I had my children at home I craved time alone and would get very anxious if things got too noisy. I enjoy being on my own even though people think I’m funny and out there, entertaining making people laugh, which I do, I know, but it can only be sustained for an hour or so then it’s back into my own world of thoughts.

If you have siblings, how is your relationship with them? Has it changed now that you are an adult?

I have two brothers. Both older and live in England so I rarely see them. In fact I haven’t seen my oldest brother for 13 years. He’s 84 now. My other brother is two years older than I am. He visited Australia about three or four years ago I was supposed to go to England in 2020 but of course Covid got in the way. I’m not sure whether I’ll go over now, it’s such a terrible journey. I’m feeling closer to the 84 year old now, more than I ever have before. We send emails to each other every month. It’s nice to feel there’s still a connection even though I left there 50 years ago.

Does growing old scare you?

Well I am old. Not as old as I could be, I suppose. As far as I can see growing old is a privilege. One not given to everyone. So many people younger than I am are dying so I try to be grateful. Not that I particularly enjoy some of those privileges that go along with ageing. The breakdown in my body for instance. However having found writing after I reached retirement age, it has kept my mind active and without my writing I’d be really scared of getting older. My husband and I are lucky in that we have each other. If I lived alone, with only myself to think about, I don’t think I’d be as happy as I am. I’ll be 78 years old in a few months and for my age I’m doing reasonably well.
I suppose we think of dying much more than we did, my husband and I. There is one blessing to living in WA and that is we have the option of a dignified death. If a person has been given a prognosis of death within 12 months then they can ask for medication to avoid a painful and prolonged death. So I suppose that takes away much of the fear of the unknown. Of course whether one is brave enough to carry it out at when the time comes is another thing.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

That’s easy. Famous!
I would have loved to become an actress or singer. Those choices in my childhood were not possible or even dreamt about.
My granddaughter Beth did that for me. I saw she was like me from the moment she was born. Her mother gave her the chances I never had. Singing and Drama lessons. She was and is amazing. She was always performing at shows and went to WAPA, that’s the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. She decided that show business wasn’t for her and is now a drama teacher. How I loved watching her perform though. I’m still her greatest fan and watching her the role of new mother to a little one who has her voracity for life is all I can ask.

What has been the most difficult time in your life?
The most difficult time in my life were the first years after emigrating from England in 1972. We knew no one here in Australia and we were a little family of three. Just John and I and our three year old. Within a year we were a family of five after having twins. This was my darkest time, having no family to call on. Our daughter missed home so much she stopped talking and one of the twins never stopped crying. How I survived those years I’ll never know.

Did you enjoy school? What life lessons did you learn from your time there?

I definitely didn’t like school. At all! I think the trouble all began on day one. This was in England 1948. Think a dark Victorian austere building, classes of forty children. And little me, the youngest in the class. Aged just four years old. There was no a gradual introduction, No. Full days straight away. 9am until 4pm. We were given chalk and a slate! And I was so shy. I didn’t want to leave my mummy!

Really the remainder of my school years are a blur now. I remember bad things, bad teachers and nothing else. I left school on my fifteenth birthday thinking I was dumb.
So what I learned from my time there? Nothing!
