| DAY ONE OF MY WRITE CHAIN. This morning on my walk with Laddie I saw a wooly bear caterpillar. Its copper band was large. I would say the copper band was at least 2/3rds the caterpillar's length. The black ends were quite small. The folklore goes, "he wider the rusty brown sections (or the more brown segments there are), the milder the coming winter will be. The more black there is, the more severe the winter." Between 1948 and 1956, Dr. Curran’s average brown-segment counts ranged from 5.3 to 5.6 out of the 13-segment total, meaning that the brown band took up more than a good third of the woolly bear’s body. The corresponding winter was mild. The Old Famer's Almanac is predicting a colder and snowier winter than normal. We will see. (Old Farmer's Almanac) On our walk this morning I also saw 16 turkey buzzards perched in the dead tree by the satellite tower. I have never seen that many turkey buzzards perched in one place before in my life. There must be something dying close by that they are waiting for.
