Museums

In old age we become
museums of ourselves,
echoing halls and rooms
filled with the clutter
of long ago, display cases
of what once was,
a record of the ages,
the imprints of our memories.

Beacon

Cyclops of the shoreline,
the lighthouse flashes a single eye,
bright beam through the darkness,
watching and warning
benighted sailors on the waves,
“Stay clear for here be rocks.”

Mariners count the sequence,
their navigation confirmed.

Choices

Hidden in the day
are many dawns of possibilities,
effulgent to the brim
with thoughts of change
and the promise of renewal,
presenting just another
throw in the immortal game
of hope and dream.

A Tale of Eight Cities

Oh, to have the audacity,
or even the loquacity,
to avoid all mendacity
and demonstrate sagacity.

If adding the capacity,
as well as some tenacity,
eschewing all pugnacity,
we might come to pure veracity.

Giant mushrooms leading to Otherland.

Mushrooms

Magic mushrooms
were a bit after my time,
so I cannot say
that they lead to an Otherland.
The shaggy ink caps, however,
picked on walks with my father,
and fried on our return,
were a passport to heaven indeed.

Ladybug

Ladybugs or ladybirds
always prefer a red dress
with black polka dots,
whether aphid feast
or mealybug ball,
their attire desired
makes other beetles
seem underdressed.

Disaster

In vain the cry goes up,
“The red button! Hit the red!”
Turning ever faster, the vanes spin
till the turbine races uncontrolled,
and shatters, flinging shards
of mayhem and destruction,
tearing veins and ripping limbs,
turbojet refusing birth.

You Are Here

Take Psycho Path to its end,
in Dementia you’ll arrive;
down Farfara Way you wend,
and from there to Cattle Drive

This leads to Fordfair Lane,
and so to Under Pass
through the high Sur Mounts,
where dwells the fair Wind Lass.

Poultry Defences

Chicken wire to build the coop
set the support posts deep
old wooden crates to build a house
boxes inside for the laying of eggs
and that’s the easy part.

But the pièce de résistance
surely must be, the passing ogre hired
for the scaring of goblins.

Man, box over head and cornered.

Boxed

Boxed into a corner,
without escape,
arguments defeated,
but now retreated
to a position,
if not impregnable,
at least blind to nemesis.
