Hi there. I’ve browsed your “Getaway” a few chapters tonight. I’ll stop in and continue reading in a few days.
I’m new at this writing thing, so my comments may be off base. But, I don’t think you need to give so much background of each of your characters when you first introduce them. Get them interacting, doing, talking, carrying the plot forward right away. If the background is needed to understand the story later, introduce it when it’s needed.
I am guilty of the same thing. I assume the reader has to know why people act the way they do from the very beginning. “Not so!” I’m told. And, my ‘How to Write’ books also say delay the backgrounds.
