It's really hard to give you any type of comment that would help you in broad terms. Until you post the book here and let others read it, nobody can truly tell you how to make your character more lovable or tell you which parts make him less lovable. So, the best advice I can give you without reading your book is to read other books where the author kills a beloved character. There are thousands. An American classic would be Old Yeller, or newer would be the Harry Potter series where several characters die who were central to the plot and beloved by all.
