Chapter #2

A Little Smaller

Tom goes upstairs to his room and decides to
get online on the computer. Maybe he can
locate a chat buddy and that will distract him
from the odd vibes he got from his stepfather
and stepbrother.
He gets online but doesn't locate any of his
usual buddies. He decides to do some
surfing, but as he moves the mouse with his
hand, the cuff of his shirt sleeve brushes
against his desktop.
He stops for a second and looks at his
sleeves. His hands are nearly concealed by
the too-long sleeves that drape far beyond his
wrists.
He thinks he must have gotten one of his
stepfather's shirts instead of his own while
sorting the laundry. That's another job left to
him to do since they won't even entertain the
notion of washing their own dirty clothes.
He starts to go back to surfing the net when
there's a knock at the door.
"What is it?" Tom yells.
The door opens and his stepbrother sidles
into the room. The 17-year-old gives Tom a
long, sustained look.
"What is it?" Tom asks Scott.
"Nothing, man," Scott answers.
"Well, if that's all..."
"Maybe you ought to take some vitamins or
something," Scott tells Tom.
"What?" Tom's voice reveals impatience and
irritation.
"You're just looking sort of different, man."
Tom frowns. He starts to order Tom to leave
the room when a wave of nausea and
dizziness slams through him.
"Something the matter?" Scott asks.
"Nothing. Just get out and let me get some
rest."
Tom stands to usher his stepbrother out of the
room. As he does so, his pants nearly trip
him. They're several inches too long.
"I'm going!" Scott says in a smug tone.
Tom closes the door after he succeeds in
forcing Scott's departure.
"What the hell is happening to me?" Tom says
aloud in a nervous voice.
