About This Newsletter

Contest & Activity Newsletter by Dawn

While not many contests currently focus on romance, a writer can still enter and challenge themselves to include a little romance within their writing. This newsletter gives that option a glance.

Letter from the editor

February is a month where some turn to the topic of romance. There is Valentine's Day right in the middle of the month and the stores have had shelves of pink and red for the past month in preparation. Flower vendors are getting their wares ready for the big rose requests and people are either trying to find something romantic to do or getting annoyed by the over pushing of the genre. Where it's a fluffy holiday of love or a reminder of the solitude that might be the existence in the moment (aka single awareness day for those of us that are single), when it comes to writing, this is a good month to consider adding a touch of romance to a story or poem.

I say this not just because for this year the site's official contest is the genre of romantic poetry either. On the site there are a few romance specific contests, but considering how wide spread the use of romance can be as both it's one genre and as a side element to any story, there really aren't that many opportunities. Sure, there are a couple going right now with one allowing paranormal romance stories and a couple of the poetic options focusing just on romance. But the numbers of contests to enter for just romance are limited.

However, that's okay. One of the great parts of the genre and subplots that we develop through the scope of romance is they fit both on their own and within the background of many things we write. So, you can enter a science fiction contest and part of the story might include romance. Or there can be a challenge to write a story every single week and you enter a daily flash challenge one with with a little bit of romantic focus involved.

The point is, when it comes to romance and writing about love for contests and activities, there are many options beyond the obviousness of a romance contest. And if you have ever considered hosting a contest or an activity that focuses on romance, now might be a good time. Especially if you want to have the main focus be another genre, the encouragement of adding depth and more can be a good choice. There are many genres available that go well with romance: mystery, fantasy, non-fiction, and poetry.

Trying to find something to write? Check out the contests and activities on the site. See if any of the prompts spark your interest and as you write, consider if there might be a little love involved within the side stages of the story. Then go from there. Enjoy the writing, help some contests our here on our site with a few entries and add just a touch of romance for good measure. If you're up for a writing challenge, check out the quotes at the bottom of this newsletter in the feedback section and write a story or poem inspired by one of them. Or find another spark of romantic inspiration in the world around you. Either way, let's write.
