About This Newsletter

Music has been a part of us throughout human history. It brings joy and can put us in touch with our spiritual side.

This week's Spiritual Newsletter, then, is all about the beauty of song.

Letter from the editor

My grandmother was a member of a choir. Whenever I visited her Salvation Army branch I loved to hear her sing. This was especially the case at Christmas time. I’ve always had a fondness of Christmas carols, and I have no doubt that she contributed to that.

Music runs through the family. My grandfather on my dad’s side was a member of a Belgian men’s choir. My great-uncle was a conductor. My grandfather on my mom’s side founded his own church and music was a big part of that. I guess I should say that it runs through that generation of the family… it’s certainly not made it down to me. I love music, but I don’t have a musical bone in my body. It’s a real shame.

I can honestly say that I tried. I’ve tried several instruments. There’s an issue with the bones in my fingers. They haven’t developed properly, leaving them rather short and brittle. They’re fine for day-to-day activities, but after some incidents I learned to avoid certain sports. Unfortunately, I also learned that they’re not very helpful when attempting to play the piano, or the guitar. In addition, having dyspraxia means that my motor skills aren’t the greatest to begin with. And I have no sense of rhythm. When I tried to play the drums I caused what my teacher called ‘unintentional reggae’.

I’m no better at singing. My grandfather on my dad’s side – the men’s choir one – could be quite cruel about it, to the point that I didn’t dare sing in his presence. I am still shy about singing in other people’s presence, but not a day goes by that I don't sing some kind of song. Singing brings me joy. I sing songs that I like, songs that are stuck in my head, songs that I make up myself, and some religious songs, too.

When I was younger I attended a church where each service contained a lot of music. During one of my first times there I was blessed to attend a special performance by the Harlem Gospel Choir. It is an experience that I will never forget. Music, I feel, is an excellent way to tap into and express one’s sense of a higher power. It is no surprise to me that it has been used for spiritual purposes by many different cultures and faiths throughout human history. I don’t know why it can be so much easier to express one’s feelings through song, rather than through regular speech but, somehow, it is. At least to me.

Music lifts me up. I guess it doesn’t matter that I am no good at it. It doesn’t matter that I cannot play any instruments, nor that I do not have a beautiful singing voice. It would be nice if I did, of course. It would be wonderful. I too, then, could join a choir, or at least feel less shy about my singing. But it wasn’t to be, and I have made peace with it.

We don’t always have to be good at something in order to enjoy it. Sometimes it’s okay to be average, or even less than average. The joy that we experience is all that matters. And when it comes to religious/spiritual songs, well, we work with what we have been given. What matters there is that we sing with our hearts and our souls, and all our human voices combined will surely make for a pleasing performance.
