You may ask yourself, when creating a new item, what good is [insert item type here]? I only want to submit my poetry and short stories, so the static item is all I need. If you decide to branch out, then already having an understanding of each item type will help you brainstorm on what to create in your portfolio!
There are many different item types on Writing.Com, and based upon your membership level, some may or may not be available to you. Here is an overview of what each item type is and what you can use it for.
Static Item They are non-interactive, non-changing works, containing only a single written piece. You can use these for posting your poetry, essay, interview, short story, fiction, non-fiction, flash fiction, opinion-based article, keeping track of awardicons given, etc. This item type is available to all membership levels.
Book There are six types of book items available on Writing.Com. Each of these types are good for a different type of book. Collections would be used to house a collection of poetry, short stories, articles, and other works that would classically be housed individually in static items. Journals are where you would keep personal writing, or blogs. Novels for sorting your chapters as individual entries. Novellas, which are shorter versions of the novel. Short stories, which can still require chapters, and handbooks, which can be used as a guide or documentation, membership charters for groups, and more. You must have an upgraded membership to create a book.
Documents allow you to upload your PDF and DOC files directly from your computer (or flash drive and other portable media if you are at a public computer) to your portfolio. This will allow you to update your document from various computers, with or without access to the Internet, and reupload after each edit. You must have a Premium membership to upload document items.
Web Pages are just as they say. You can make an Author Biography for your portfolio, post your resume, link to other items within your portfolio in whichever format you prefer. This item allows you to use HTML and WritingML together! You must have a Premium membership to create a Web Page.
Product Reviews are sort of like those book reports that you had and have to write while in school. It allows you to access a product's ISBN on Amazon.com and then write a review on it. Since Amazon.com sells more than books, this allows you to review things such as video games, electronic devices, and anything else you can think of. All membership levels can create a Product Review.
Message Forums are great to collude with other members of Writing.Com, whether it be on an specific subject of interest, a common location, or a contest. Since the Message Forums are thread-based, you can discuss multiple topics at the same time or stick with a single topic. They are a very versatile item type! You must have at least a Basic membership in order to create Message Forums.
Campfire Creatives allow you to split the storyteller's job into pieces. Have as many as 25 total storytellers for a single story. Pass the baton, so to speak, for as long as you'd like, and then extinguish the campfire to complete the story. Any membership level can create a Campfire Creative.
Community Notes are fun to create and send to others on site and off. They are a great way to raise Gift Points for an upgrade or for charity groups on-site. Create various collections of cNotes or only one collection. The sky is the limit on the topics, too. Wish others a happy birthday, happy retirement, or congratulate them on their recent case promotion! Since you need to have access to images in order to create a cNote, an Upgraded membership is required.
Madlibs are super fun! Tell a story and allow others to change various nouns, verbs, numbers, or other words in order to put their own twist on the story. The results could make a laughable combination, or they could be dark and sinister. The best part is that no two stories will ever be the same! All membership levels can create a Madlib.
User Polls are great to provide research or to find out the opinions of others on Writing.Com. You can find out what the prevalent favorite color is of authors on the site, or you can ask them silly questions and provide equally silly choices as a means of entertainment. All membership levels can create a User Poll.
Crossword Puzzles are easier to make than you'd think! Writing.Com does all of the hard work, and you provide the clues and the words. Once you choose the layout you like best, Writing.Com arranges the words for you so that others can try to solve your puzzle. You can create a crossword puzzle on any topic, in relation to anything you'd like! Any membership level can create a Crossword Puzzle.
Interactive Stories are similar to the Choose Your Own Adventure style of books. The author starts the story and others around the site add a portion, until someone brings it to an end. There are unlimited options with an Interactive Story, since the story can branch out in many different directions. Once you get to the end of a storyline, it is your turn to add a chapter, along with any twists and turns you find fit into the plot! Any membership level can create an Interactive Story.
Groups are great for a quantity of members to share a group of items with limited access, mail one another, and maintain a Gift Point balance separate from each individual's Gift Point account. Any membership level can join a Group, but you must have an Upgraded membership in order to create a Group.
In & Out items are a great way to keep a rolling story or keeping a list. Many members use In & Outs for others to submit items to be reviewed, for fun games, and for a guest book in their portfolio. You could also use it to collect contest entries. There are so many things this item type can do, it's impossible to list them all in one place! All membership levels can create In & Out items.
Survey Forms allow up to 50 questions and are great for doing research on a paper, finding out what others think of a subject, more in-depth than with a Poll, or using as submission forms for contests. You could also use a Survey Form as a membership request for a Group. An Upgraded membership is required to create a Survey Form.
Word Search items is another fun item type that allows your readers to find words that you have chosen. Writing.Com does all of the hiding work for you, but you and your readers get to have all of the fun! All membership levels can create a Word Search.
Quizzes are a fun way to create some interactivity in your portfolio. Create graded and weighted quizzes for others to take, so your readers can find out what kind of fruit they most resemble, or find out how well they know your portfolio. All membership levels can create a quiz.
Photo Albums allow you to upload and store multiple photos in a single item type in your portfolio. This is handy if you have a blog that you'd like to post photos in, but don't want to clutter your portfolio with many Image items. Photos are sized up to 550x550 and are automatically resized smaller if they are uploaded at a larger size. Since you can display individual images within the photo albums, they are handy for keeping header images or other items, as well. You must have a Premium membership in order to create a Photo Album.
Images allow you to add some decoration to your portfolio! Add an image to any item type to give it an attention-grabbing heading. Include illustrations for your books or novels. You can have as many images as your membership level allows items in your portfolio. You must have an Upgraded membership to upload Images.
Audio allows you to post sound bytes, songs you've composed, or lyrics that you have written. You must have a Professional membership to create an Audio item.
Portfolio Folders allow you to add some organization to your portfolio. Do you write both poetry and short stories? House each within their respective Portfolio Folder so your readers can choose which type they'd like to visit. Do you have a collection of Polls? Keep them all in one space by creating a Portfolio Folder for them. Basic membership is required to create a Portfolio Folder.
