An entry for the daily flash fiction contest.
"This is so confusing," the boy muttered to himself, running through the forest. Branches were smacking him in the face, thorns were tearing his clothes, ripping at his skin, but he had to escape. The adrenaline kept him going, it was a matter of fight or flight. He didn't know who was behind him, but he was too scared to turn and look. The footsteps seemed to speed up and slow down in sync with his own, signaling that the person was following him in close quarters. But why? Who would be following him? He quickly realized that he was running in circles. He had seen that tree just seconds ago, and he had already passed by the pond twice. What was going on? He decided to switch directions and instead of running forward, he turned to his left. He realized that he had once again come upon the same pond. How could this happen if he changed directions? The boy had been running for what seemed like hours, and he was ready to give up. He sat down by the pond that he had passed by so many times, and curled up into a ball. He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, he saw a reflection gleaming back at him from the pond. In the reflection, he saw not only himself, but a clone of himself sitting in the exact position.
