Norma's Wanderings around a small section of Montana |
I have to give a big shout-out to my friends Morgan and Joey. Their little restaurant in Roundup, The BackPorch, just got a nomination for the James Beard Awards. Yippee!!! And for all you foodies out there, you know what an honor it is to be a James Beard nominee or winner. They had this idea of running a restaurant out of a remodeled motel room, which they did, successfully for several months. Then a building downtown became available to rent. So they took that little idea and transferred it to a bigger space. A space to grow that also has a larger event space as well. Morgan is also on the SE Montana Tourism board with me. We often ride together to meetings, since some are 3+hours from Roundup. Our conversations often include plans for his motel and his restaurant. So if you're ever in Roundup, Montana and need a good motel and a good meal, I can hook you up with a few good places! https://www.bigskymotel.com https://www.facebook.com/thebackporchroundup https://www.jamesbeard.org/blog/the-2023-james-beard-awards-semifinalists |
CATEGORY 1 PROMPTS * Compare living in downtown, rural or suburbs and which one you'd like and why not the others. I have lived in all three situations. I guess I like living in a small town best of all. Would that be considered downtown? My town is small, the downtown is a few blocks. Most of the store fronts are old, most are abandoned buildings with absentee owners. But we are trying to get this downtown area revitalized. Our little house is just a block off four lane Main Street which also happens to be an important north-south State highway. But I don’t hear truck traffic, or much of anything. I like living here. I can walk anywhere, I feel safe. I know my neighbors. W/C 105 CATEGORY 2 PROMPTS Are the Olympics still a worthwhile event since they are very expensive, have become political, and just benefit a few, if any? The true spirit of the Olympics has been lost, in my opinion. Athletes are competing for more than just the glory, honor, and a crown of laurel leaves. They compete for money, advertising dollars and future honor. Amateur athletes are represented in the current Olympics? I think they are the furthest thing from the ideal that the ancient Greeks had in mind. W/C 62 CATEGORY 3 PROMPTS What living celebrity, politician, scientist or world figure do you think is most important as a role model? We should idolize teachers and doctors and nurses. We need to pay homage to those people in our world that help others. I don’t worship celebrities, sports figures, politicians, world figures or even scientists. They have all done a good job of getting us into a world of problems. W/C 49 |
Anyone else out there being Zoomed to death? One week I had 6 meetings, all on the computer. Now granted technology is wonderful. We don't spend time and gas traveling to meetings. And here in Montana, sometimes you can spend hours in travel for a few hours in meeting time. But really. Today I had another meeting of a new group I was requested to join in October. This is a lobbying group for tourism in Montana. Montana is in a unique position this legislative year. We have billions, yes, that is right, billions with a B, of dollars that need to be allocated to something. The Governor wants it to go to the people, the tourism groups want it back. The money came mainly from a tax on lodging. Montana is a great place to visit in a pandemic, lots of wide open spaces, we said. And people came. Lots of people came. We in Montana don't have a sales tax. That is wonderful thing. I am painfully reminded of sales tax when I travel out of state. And I am so glad to get back home again. What the price is on the label is what I pay. Of course there are exceptions. The bed tax is added to hotel/motel stays and recently to the VRBO type lodgings. Our lobbying group, Montana Travel Association, is brand new. We are forming and deciding and building this group week by week. A lot of back and forth, a lot of meetings. All by Zoom. And now the Montana legislature is meeting. Daily for three months to decide on over 4,000 bills. Yikes. Lots of jockeying for notice, for position, for money. So now I am off to another meeting. Luckily this one is in town. I can walk there. And meet with real people in a real live situation. Hallelujah. |
It's been a nice stretch of weather here in my neck of the woods. No rain, no snow, no wind. Nothing. Just a lot of lingering ice that is left over from that big snow a while back. But warmer weather will soon get rid of it, we pray. I went to town the other day and took a friend. We had a good day wandering around, doing a few chores. Mainly I was just amazed at the jump in prices of many items. Good grief. I really don't know how families are feeding their children now. Food is so much more expensive than just a year ago. So what can you do? Not much, other than cut back on expenses. We already don't eat out very much. About the only time we do is when we go to Billings to shop. Or if it is a special occasion, such as a birthday or anniversary. I really don't understand people that eat lunch out every day or dinner many times a week. Or get coffees every day. I know I have ways I can cut back. Don't get me started on the problem I have with salty snacks. Egads the price of potato chips... It's going to be a long winter in the barn, it seems. |
I sit here on New Year's Eve, watching some videos online, listening to fireworks outside, reading the last of a good book, working on computer stuff. Multi-tasking if you will. Ever watch 'Slow Horses' on Apple TV? Oh my - such fun. Gary Oldman is the star actor with a great bunch of unknowns supporting him as the ne'er do well secret agents in London. Well, it's a good series, limited. So one thing he said tonight got my attention, and he has a lot of good cynical lines mind you, but these, 'Elvis shot JFK and Hitler built the pyramids'. Okay - that gave me a good laugh. And then I thought, what good conspiracy theories those two ideas would be. Why not?? There are stranger ideas out there. Then there is a series on Hulu called 'Nine Perfect Strangers' that has sucked me in, starring Nicole Kidman and some others. Now this is kind of quirky with people going to a 'wellness' spa and being subjected to 'micro-dosing' of hallucinogens but is that part of some other sinister plot?? Hmm. I just finished two excellent books. 'The Kingdom' by Jo Nesbo and 'Our Missing Hearts' by Celeste Ng. Both good writers with unusual story ideas. Nesbo has two brothers in Norway, owners of land. It deals with childhood trauma, murder most devious, trickery, building a hotel, and just an excellent tale of family drama. Then Ng has a story of prejudice and a dystopian society that sure does sound like it could happen, it was written this past year, perhaps not in the not-too-distant future. Pretty scary stuff. After my last whiny post I've spent a lot of alone time, reading, listening to online music, really taking care of myself. Now that the holidays are over, I am clawing my way back to the top of a dark pit. I should be out of it in soon. I have until 1 AM, that is when the fireworks are legally supposed to quit, I pray. |
So glad the hype is over. I hate Christmas and all it has become. I don't get any phone calls from my children. I did call my mother, she didn't want to talk. That is a drag. I don't get any presents from anyone. That is a drag. So when this time of year rolls around, I go into a dark place. I know Christmas is more than presents. I know that. But I don't have the family around me anymore. I have my husband, yes, but he has his family to support him. Somehow that is not the same. They call, mine do not. He got a gift from his daughter. A large box of fudge. At least 5# of fudge in the mail. I wanted to throw it away. I hate fudge, It is too sweet, it has milk in it. I cannot eat it. So hubby considers it his job to eat the entire blasted box in the time between Christmas and the New Year. Really? Along with two pastries he made. He's already eaten one of them, and working on another. Merry Christmas to him. We did go with a friend to a friend of hers for Christmas dinner. Oh my, this place is really in the 'back of beyond'. Out in the middle of nowhere. It's beautiful place, spotlessly clean, gorgeous home. We had a nice dinner with lovely people then had to drive back home again, in the dark, on back roads. Not my favorite thing to do in Montana. I am now sulking in my cluttered little house, waiting for the remodeling project to be finished. 'Maybe in the new year' was the last promise. It will be a year since we started this project. I am so over it. But I gave it to God. He is in control. So thanks for reading my crying and ranting and raving. I hope everyone had a good holiday. I'm glad it's over. Bah humbug. Now I just have to get through the fireworks on New Year's Eve. At least my windows will be closed. |
"Button up your overcoat, when the wind is free..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UliCMEdTFE Hang on your hats folks, it's a good storm headed your way. Today it was -25° when I woke up. Yikes. It is 37° in the basement just feet below my feet. That is cold. The barometric pressure at last glance was 30.31. Pretty high. In winter a high pressure system will be associated with cold and dry days and frost. Pretty much explains our weather the last few days. Clear and cold. We did have a few inches of snow a few days ago, but clear and cold and dry the rest of the time. I'm not worried about staying warm. We have a 1,000 gallon propane tank that is 50% full. But I do worry about others with wood heat, fuel oil or electric heat that have problems paying. Even small propane tanks. Fuel is expensive now. Yesterday we did Meals on Wheels - that was quite an adventure. Getting in and out of the warm car was not fun. I did call the day before to make sure it was going to happen at -20°, but they reassured me it would. So we delivered meals to those who couldn't get out. Then we scurried home to our warm house and made a turkey potpie, and banana bread and auto-cleaned the oven. The kitchen got nice and warm. Today's project is stollen. So stay nice and safe and warm writing buddies. |
We did some shopping a few days ago at CostCo. It is always dicey around a holiday to attempt to shop in that huge place. But we breezed through in record time. Hubby and I tag teamed, he shopped for a friend, I shopped for us. His cart had 5 items, none of it food, ours had about double that. The totals were the same. The difference? Our friend is a big disposable product user. Paper towels, kleenex, paper plates, plastic silverware. I swear she could open a store and supply the town with what she has on hand. Tell me, how does one person use a case of kleenex in a month? Amazing. Oh well, her money, not mine. Any way, on the way out, a gentleman comes up beside me and asks me if I want to trade carts. "Well, depends. What do you have in yours?" I spy a huge slab of meat balanced on top. "Oh that? It's a prime rib for my family. I think I'll charge them admission this year to pay for it." We got to talking about how much that cost. $150. What??? My cart cost less than that one item. I was just at another store looking for a small can of Crisco, couldn't find one. The large can was about $9. What?? When did that happen? Food prices are just out of sight right now. I really don't know how people with large families or seniors with very limited food budgets are finding the way to afford any kind of decent food. I am glad I have a frugal hubby. We are in a good place and have no worries. Thanks be to God. |
I just watched a movie on Apple TV. I subscribe to it, since I don't have regular TV now. Plus it's on my computer. 'Emancipation' was just released. It stars Will Smith as a slave in Louisiana. He escapes a work camp and has to find his way back to his family he left behind. Oh my, it was wonderful. A very realistic movie based on an actual person, quite graphic and touching at the same time. Will Smith is excellent in his role, as is the woman playing the part of his wife. The supporting actors also are wonderful. Well done, Apple. They have quite a number of good programs on their platform now. Series, movies. Lots to choose from. So if you can access it, by all means take the time to watch this movie. I give it 2 thumbs up, as Roger Ebert used to say. |
As treasurer for the Chamber of Commerce in town, I get the mail from its post office box. Every few weeks the Chamber receives a little business newspaper. The issue I got today had a little column that for some reason had some interesting quotes by Einstein. So I thought I'd share a few. "Creativity is intelligence having fun." "Thinking is hard work; that's why so few do it." "The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." "Logic can take you from point A to point B. Imagination can take you wherever you want." "I refuse to engage in an intellectual battle with an unarmed man." And probably a favorite: "I am neither especially clever nor especially gifted. I am only very, very curious." |
