I'm working on a Mystery/Thriller and decided to do a full background on my sleuth.
The story is set in 1957 and the sleuth's wife is dead before he moves to a new location and stpes in it.
How did his wife die?
A) She died of a combo of polio with full paralysis and pneumonia in 1948 The polio epidemic was 1947, but more adults died of it in 1948
B) She died in a horrible traffic accident that was clearly an accident
C) She was murdered by the father of a serial prostitute killer, afte rhe put the psychopath away. The police caught his wife's killer

Which do you like the best?
I would like B. An accident, but a horrible one. A murder would be to cliché and I don't think A would be as interesting.

Gave up on trying to use any craft books.
Story trumps Craft.
Worrying about craft deletes creativity.
Now, I'm just writing, what I like to call, a personal-practice novel.

Today, I'm taking a break.
Right now working on a mystery story and the plotting is getting to be plodding.
So, why would I write a mystery story?
Well, I used to work for the State, investigating potential violations of the International Fuel Tax Agreement.
Yes, I came across some fairly odd stuff, but since this has to do with Tax, I cannot ever divulge exactly what, who or even why of an actual investigation.
Thus a novel. And as a retired investigator, what better than a Mystery?
