I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This provides a lot of food for thought, especially since I know someone who was heavily impacted by the pandemic on a mental level. He got some help, and I hope it's enough.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

This is very beautiful. The dance of time is far more difficult when one is feeling exhausted or otherwise unwell.

This is great to know! Some of it went over my head because I'm not too familiar with the region, but it's good for me to learn more about what's happening in the world.

The grammar could use work. If you want a more in-depth look at sentence structures, I recommend reading "The Elements of Grammar" by Margaret Shertzer.

Formatting tip: please start a new paragraph every time the speaker changes in dialogue. This is standard practice in fiction and helps make the piece easier to read.

This is lots of fun! However, in today's world, I can't imagine anyone letting a child run home alone, unless the houses are super close together.

Hello! I found this through the random “Read & Review” feature.

This was a funny read. I've seen some Family Guy, though not an extensive amount. It felt a bit disjointed, though, as if the references were jammed in places they didn't fit.

Thanks for sharing your writing :)

I like the way the chain of events is interconnected with the protagonist's family. I also like the way religion and science are blended here.

Review of Farewell

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This has a lot of powerful emotions in it.

Try avoiding forms of the verb “to be” such as am, are, is, was, were, etc. This is known as passive language. Using more colorful verbs can greatly strengthen your writing and make it less wordy.

Example: The ballpark was packed, and the crowd was electric.
--> An electric crowd packed the ballpark.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

Thanks for requesting my review!

What strikes me most about these lyrics is the concept of "When HE taps us/me on the shoulder." On the first read of this, I assumed that HE referred to God, and then I saw that it was referring to the Reaper. As such, the part about dancing with all the girls struck me as lustful, and the part about eating all the finest foods and licking the platters struck me as gluttonous. I'm not religious these days, but I used to run with that crowd, so I often see things from that perspective. It was the capitalization that made me assume we were talking about God, though I noticed the change from He to HE in the middle of the song. Was it supposed to be God at first, and then the Reaper later?

Review of What Love is

Hello! I found this through the random “Read & Review” feature.

This reminds me of the feelings I have for my first love, though he made me no promises except in my dreams. I still dream of him sometimes, and I believe there is something deeper there on a spiritual plane of existence that we will eventually have access to.

Review of My Boys
Review by K5Rakitan

Hello! I found this through the random “Read & Review” feature.

This is a super sweet poem. My son is 2.5, and many days are starting to look like this, though we don't have a consistent bathtime. I typically spray him down after we eat popsicles outside or if he's been playing in the dirt. When we do have a proper bath, it's usually whenever I want a long soak in the tub.

Thanks for sharing your writing :)
