A tribute, to the valiant people, fighting drug abuse. Written for a school play
Counselor :
Look at the man flopped on the chair
His haggard face, his matted hair,
The syringe pricks, the soulless eyes
A slave to the needle, filled with malice

Drugs are poison, a highway to hell,
Soon it might ring in your death knell.
Stop now ! Listen to my advice,
Leave drugs be, drop this vice !

Addict :
Your advice is sound – but a trifle late
I am a slave of the barbiturate
The long white sticks with filtered tips
Were a stepping stone to my cocaine fix

Didn’t care much for my student life
It was full of pain, laced with strife
Frustrations made me a bit too brash
And I drowned all my sorrows in hash

Folks at home were never unkind
Just never understood my state of mind
I tried to reach out, to explain
They couldn’t understand my pain

I beg, I borrow, I take, I steal
My daily fix is like a meal
If deprived, I shudder in dread
If I get it, I live instead

Counselor :
What a way to live my man
Crippled for your entire lifespan
Shake off the habit, there is still hope
With my help – leave the dope

Addict :
De-addiction !! Do you know how it feels ?
When the pain grips you from head to heels
When your body is upon the rack
You feel its better to stick to smack

You preach, you talk, you advise
But I just can’t drop this vice
A traveler between life and death
Leave me in peace – till my last breath

Counselor :
Your moral turpitude – I forbid
Don’t nurture such thoughts morbid
Face the world and see it anew
I stand with you, to heal, renew

The pushers – they are not your friends
They are worse than hells fiends
They’ve lived on your blood, sucked you dry
Poisoned your soul until you died

The travails of life you must face
In this world you must carve a place
I am your friend, let me help, dear one
To dispel the darkness, usher the sun

Don’t give up – rally and fight !!
I am with you – till victory is in sight
Help fill your heart with radiance
Leave drugs now! Try - just once

Addict :
My friend – you have stirred up my hope
I’ll give up drugs – to hell with coke
Hold me when I start to shake
Wipe my tears – don’t let me break

The sun is low – the shadows are long
My heart drums up a stubborn song
Of brilliant light – a vibrant score
Liberated, unfettered – once more! Once more!!

Together :
Don’t be tempted, don’t succumb dear friends
When offered coke, hash or cigarette ends
When the monster urges you to have a go
Steel your being, utter a resounding – NO !!
