Fear it, the tiger just beyond the firelight
Like Death, I feel him stalking me,
The tiger in the night.
I am alone, I am afraid.
I dare not sleep tonight.

Jungle sounds surround me,
I build my fire high,
Never knowing when he might spring,
And always asking why.

Turning, turning, never resting,
I keep my vigil, dire,
A shadow here, a rustle there,
Somewhere just beyond the fire.

The fire my only ally,
My hands a poor defense.
At any moment he might spring.
I do not know from whence.

Patiently he waits me out,
The licking flames abate,
My fuel gone, my prayers unheard,
I fear dawn will come too late.

Tell not to me your bedtime tales,
Sing not your lullabies.
Keep your words of comfort,
The tiger walks tonight.
