Poem on the various happenings of a family barbecue.
Awake to the cool Saturday morn
this day eagerly awaited
rummage the closet for clothes worn
but still as nice as anticipated.
A simple joy of the family barbecue
saturated with love and the dripping dew.

Set forth to a sun set aglow
toward the park we are headed
as the car goes, so does the excitement grow.
our path, we feel no others have treaded.
A simple joy of the family barbecue
from a child's jubilant point of view.

Upon arrival, the crowd's already forming
a king's entrance be prepared to make
to a welcoming cloud of such heart warming
a sight my breath it's free to take
A simple joy of the family barbecue
seemingly too formulaic to be impromptu.

Greetings spread all around
old faces to remember, new faces to learn
some lost friendships being found
others more ancient struggle to become modern.
A simple joy of the family barbecue
not so easy for one to do.

The afternoon, it does swiftly near
with it comes a reason for the games to begin
running barefoot through grass, blanketed by an audience's cheer
being hailed a champion as you spike the pigskin.
A simple joy of the family barbecue
to always remember the pass Dad threw.

Quest to find a quench to your thirst
hand submerged in the freezing cold
navigate by the floating beer first
to discover the last soda of which to grab hold.
A simple joy of the family barbecue
I'm sure we've all gone through.

The old now sit in a circle of chairs
thinking back on their youth, happy to reminisce
reliving fun memories and forgetting their cares
omitting the pains of that which they miss
A simple joy of the family barbecue
for that one guy, what's his face, oh you know who.

The night slowly grows to a close
goodbyes being said, one last look back to let go.
with the moon being all that now glows,
tonight turns to tomorrow.
A simple joy of the family barbecue
a fact that forever holds true.

So the kids they go on playing
the adults witness their childhood
a sight that's worth relaying
to what's inside all that feels good.
A simple joy of the family barbecue
is one worth giving to you.
