OLD FRIENDS

Friendships formed are common, many come, many more go.
Friendships formed to last are a rarity indeed.
So few can say from the heart
they truly have an old and trusted friend.

Friendships shattered deeply wound.
From hurt we withdraw.
Fear of the hurt denies us our old friends.
But if a friendship shatters was it true?
Not possible with old friends.

Friendships are strained by distances and time,
yet your old friends are always there --
Always will they be counted upon.
“A friend loves at all times...” ( Proverbs 17:17 ).

Your old friends are true,
will always tell you what you need to hear,
even when their words are harsh.
“Faithful are the wounds of a friend” ( Proverbs 27:6 ).

In times of greatest hardship it is the loyalty of friends you require.
You will have it from old friends.
“Do not forsake your own friend...” ( Proverbs 27:10 ).

If only we all could be granted the blessing of old friends.
I pray for that blessing of at least one.
God, grant me one, just one.
One who will transcend all of my failings, all of my flaws,
hear my sorrow, and know my fears.
A man cannot survive in this flesh without old friends.
