Regardless of who's around and better trained, mom is the expert on children.
Sitting alone listening to play
Skin slaps skin
And I wait for it…

Feverish footsteps head in my direction
One behind the other

MOOOOOOOOOOM!
I didn't do it

The last is a lie serving only to indemnify
But she took my pen.

Enjoying the patio
A cup of coffee and the dad
Playful sounds turn to painful sounds
Something hits the ground

And I wait for it…

Bare feet trod solid ground at a feverish pace
Narrowly missing a pile of poo
Running past dad who is sitting in right there.

MOOOOOOOOOOM!
I didn't do it!

Dad sits somehow oblivious to the poo
I'm not sure who I'm more upset with.

My day to sleep in, and his too I guess
The first one out of bed loses
Small steps enter the room
Chilly fingers touch my arm.

I'm going to lose the game
though I'm farthest away
So I wait for it….

good morning mom.
