One has so much, from so many unthanked sources, in life!
Debts Unpaid

A borrower am I, and the world a lender,
when can I all my debts repay?
and how, save in my dreams perhaps,
for naught is my own to give away!

All have shared their riches with me…….

When on tired wings gloom hovered near,
and threatened to sit upon my brow,
a merry sunbeam distributed her cheer,
and set my world a'right somehow.

I'd fought with another, the other had scored,
defeated and rankling, I could not stay,
then cold cleansing rain, from the sky it poured,
my misery and pain it washed away,
my spirits lifted, confidence restored,
answering prayer,ere I could pray!

Alone and wrestling with unsure thoughts,
enveloped by darkness at witching hour,
‘tis the moon, palely watching, who sees and plots;
to send a star to twinkle reassurance.
How can I thank them, proudly aloof,
riding countless miles over my roof?

I have taken from all to suit my need
assuaged my every appetite and greed,
taken also from other creatures that live
without bothering to ask if they wanted to give.

The buds that I plucked, did they opt for a shroud?
are these the valiant colours of martyrs proud?
Or are they pining for home, wilted and forlorn?
unwanted in waning, dying alone!
The golden produce, the fruits that are borne,
do they belong to me because the fields I plowed?
Do they blessings bestow, or have they vengeance vowed?

If only in return I could give someone aught,
this burden of debt would not live as my thought!
