how to keep a resouseful child safe
The Escape Artist

Let me tell you of my grandson, he recently turned four
It seems as if he can pass through almost any door
We cannot let him out alone. He runs into the street
Without a care or worry of the harm that he may meet
So we locked him in for safety’s sake, but there is no doubt
That sneaky little boy is just obsessed with getting out.
The sliding door he could unlock, and so we made it fast
By blocking it from sliding with a locking clasp.
We put it way up at the top and fastened it with care
So we knew he couldn’t reach it even standing on a chair.
We then put childproof doorknobs on every door that’s left
We knew he couldn’t use them; we put it to a test
He can’t get out without us now, his reply was to scoff
Since he could not turn them, instead he took them off
We put a chain lock on the door, way up at the top
Some adults couldn’t reach it now; of course he’ll have to stop
He can’t get out into the street, or that is what we thought
It took a lot of work but we have saved him as we ought
The house then went so quiet, we decided to explore
And saw that he had managed to unlock the garage door.
We fixed that with safety locks, but then I’ll have you know
We caught him as he was going out a second floor window
We’ve locked and bolted all the doors and windows in the place.
If we made it any tighter we could send it into space
We’ll keep him safe, I swear it, but keeping him alive
Is surely going to kill us long before that boy turns five.
