An event I hoped to occur, as I was preparing myself for my flight across the country.
You walk away
with a saddened look.
You slowly turn around
and I catch your eyes.
Without another thought,
I’m brought back to that night;
alone together,
and I hear those harmonious sighs.
I close my eyes and see your face,
the way it looked before the heartache.
Like a dagger it hits me
and I open my eyes.
By this time you’re out of sight.
I breathe lightly but my heart is heavy.
Then like music to my ears,
it replays again.
I’ll cherish it forever
’cause my love for you won’t end.
Then, as the memory slowly fades,
reality sets in.
I’d tell you I love you,
but it’s far too late.
So as I turn and walk away,
I think of the time
when you first said you loved me.
I speak aloud ‘I love you too’.
As a tear falls gently down my cheek,
I hear you scream my name.
At first I thought it was another memory,
but then I turn to see your smile.
I lift my head
from where it once had hung,
and open my arms
as you run toward me.
As you jump into my arms,
I feel whole again.
You tell me it didn’t feel right leaving,
and asked if I had something to say.
As I tell you I do,
I begin to cry.
You wipe the tears
and tell me, “its okay.”
I look into your eyes
and say “you’re the one”.
You look down and take a breath.
Then, as you’re about to speak,
I tell you not to.
You lift your head
and I say,” let me show you”.
I place my hand on your neck
and with the slightest touch,
I kiss your lips.
The feeling I get
makes it hard to breathe.
My heart is pounding
and my knees get weak.
As our lips separate from one another,
you look into my eyes.
At first I’m scared that
you’ll look right through me.
But soon the thoughts
leave my mind.
The few seconds of silence
feel like an eternity.
But looking in your eyes,
I would stay forever.
As you let out
a wistful sigh,
you pull me close.
Having you in my arms
is what I’ve wanted.
But what I needed
is what came next.
Through a shaky voice
I heard you say,
”I won’t ever leave you,
because I love you too”.
