THE BLACK KNIGHT

In the hills above the castle rode a knight of old,
but only in the deep dark of night is his story told.
The few that have seen him, much to their dismay,
saw a face tormented, and remember to this day.

In his hand a sword of silver, dark eyes of warning
"Come no closer or give up hope of seeing morning."
The black knight turned his mighty steed around
and he disappeared from view, without any sound.

Banished from the Kingdom for a deed he didn't do,
revenge was on his mind, he would see it through.
One by one the other knights failed in their quest
to capture him, a reign of terror to be laid to rest.

Forced by circumstance to plunder for his food,
he would steal in the dead of night. Being crude
was not his nature, but there was no other way
he could survive the elements to live another day.

Years passed slowly but the hunt for him went on
until at last, they thought that he must be gone.
Yet in the moonlight glow, he rides alone and free.
while the stories of the dark knight are a memory.

Behind the castle walls, a maiden with golden hair
cries bitterly for her lover, his treatment was unfair.
She climbs up to the tower and searches the sky
and all below it, knowing without him she would die.

The maiden left the castle walls just before dawn
and quite fast was the horse that she rode upon.
There would be a reunion of dark knight and maid,
long before sunrise, they'd meet in a forestry glade.

An incurable romantic, this story must end well
though the clamor echoes still from the old bell.
The King mourned the loss of his favorite child
but he soon disowned her for being insanely wild.

In a forestry glade, the dark knight stood smiling
at the golden haired maiden who was so beguiling.
Never again were they seen and never again heard.
Gone from their homeland, without even a word.
