True story regarding the birth of my granddaughter
No Interruption Today, Thank You!
by Cheryl Campbell

Mommy and Daddy, I thank you
for not taking their advice.
The specialists read the test results;
they don't think I'm worth the price.

They said I have a birth defect
and most people choose this route.
And that it's really no big deal,
it would be the best way out.

I thank you for being brave enough
to firmly stand your ground;
to look them in the eye and say,
"This baby's life is sound.

We don't believe we'll 'interrupt'
this pregnancy, as you say.
No matter how you word it,
it's a life you'd be taking away.

God has blessed us with this child
He chose us to raise her right.
We'll take her and whatever comes
along with her little life."

You left the office that cold day
your future looking quite bleak.
You knew you could get through it
if His guidance you would seek.

The months wore on with never a doubt
that you had made the right choice.
The day arrived to see my face
and finally hear my voice.

You took one look and realized
the doctors had made a mistake.
And when you held me in your arms
you thought your heart would break.

For all those babies whose parents
had taken the doctors' advice
and interrupted those perfect lives
wiped out by the fate of the dice.

This piece was not written for the debate about abortion. (Although, I will say that I, myself, am against it) It was written because it is the true story about the birth of my granddaughter. The specialists told my 22 year old daughter that because of her age (?!?), she was at high risk of having a Down's Syndrome baby.  Then they did some blood tests that came back positive for DS and actually told her that they should "interrupt" the pregnancy. They told the doctors that abortion was not an option and they would accept whatever God gave them. When their daughter was born, she did not have Down's Syndrome or any birth defect whatsoever. We were prepared and willing to love her and care for her, whatever the outcome.
