My cat killed a sunbird the other day and it got me thinking about the innocent suffering
Sonnet to a Sunbird

Oh little sunbird, lying on the floor
Sparkles glistening from your blue head
Once you danced with flower - alas, no more
Your crumpled black body in the clutches of the dead

Oh beautiful little sunbird, feathers full of life
Beak opened a crack with life's last song
Killed by claws, oh little sunbird, it just isn't right
But who can say the cat was in the wrong

Never again shall you witness the sky open her maw
You shall not wake to see another day
Sorrow fills my heart for those who never saw
You, oh little sunbird - those who never got to say

Oh little sunbird, you are so beautiful
Oh little sunbird - isn't life cruel?
