Blue eyes.
I don’t remember that much due to the darkness,
but I know that they shined so brightly.
You smelled of the outdoors,
as did I.
My hair of the burning pine straw and firewood,
your shirt of the smoke that the flames exhaled onto you.
They made you glow,
the fire illuminated your face.
Your hands were surprisingly soft,
to be put through such survivalist style tasks,
even softer than my own.
There was such a look of contentment on your face as you fed the fire,
as if the engulfment of the logs was a success to you.
The moonlight reflected off of the river as we sat by the edge.
You pointed out constellations of stars that I had never seen before.
The winter breeze chilled my skin, but you were warm.
It felt like hours passed as we finally smothered the fire.
The coals seemed to sparkle like city lights on the ground.
You held me for a second,
as if you were taking the moment in,
just like I was.
We began to walk back home out of the woods.
You never once let go of my hand as I trailed a little slower behind you.
I felt safe with you.
I don’t know what it means,
or where it could take me.
But, I believe in nights like that one.
I’ve never slept as soundly as I did with your arms tightly around me.
