Differences in what we are told is ok in love, and what people actually expect.
Prince charming riding in
On his white horse
A prince for a princess
Well yeah of course…

They say that if you pray
To God above
A prince will arrive and
You he will love….

So American girls
Dream of their prince
From their second birthday
And onward since

As these girls get older
They learn a lot
Lectures and silent words
Lessons they’re taught

Well one silent message
I never heard
Is one apparently
I should’ve learned

A prince for a princess
That sounds correct
So why my prince
Do my teachers reject?

Well this girl never dreamed
In black and white
Which apparentlys not
Considered right

A blonde girl, a blonde prince
Why should that be?
Because my dark skinned prince
Makes me happy

His eyes are indeed brown
Yes mine are blue
Tell me, if I don’t care
Then why should you?

Treat everyone equal
They always said
I guess between the lines
I should’ve read

The say diff’rent attracts,
And yet they say
Our love isn’t natural
My heart wont sway.

Opposing binaries
Wrong over right
Rich is better than poor
black against white

Hate’s not in remission
At least not here
Maybe someday our love
Won’t make them fear.
