This poem is about is Burt Bacharach's music and why it means what it does to me.
Burt, Hal, Dionne

and anyone else who

performed your music

through the 1980's-

Two words for those

fatter royalty checks:

You're welcome.

And thank you for the soundtrack

which saw me through a hapless life

And being there when my heart was breaking.

You see this guy?

I really wish I would have

played that song.

That's how it was in February, but in August?

Just the odds and ends of a beautiful affair.

Why do birds suddenly appear

every time you are near?

One year close to you,

the next year different home rooms.

What's it all about, high school?

You'll never got to Heaven

(tell it to the banker)

Always something three to remind me

(travelogues at the Shrine?)

There was one of those girls

the Blue Seas music men

couldn't put in mind.

The look?

Her grin turned me on,

but she was much too innocent.

Someone wrote a song about her

since I knew in the days of

sand and shovels.

"L" is for the way

you look at me,

oops, wrong Burt.
