Chapter 34: Mega Woman meet Lance Byrons
Chapter 34: Mega Woman meet Lance Byrons

Mega Woman had not changed back to Liz after the interview. Instead, she flew around the Earth visiting different places and meeting people who had seen her interview. She should have been tired but she wasn’t. It had been exhilarating to test her powers and see that whatever they threw at her, she could take it. Take it and more.

“Over one billion pounds. WITH ONE FREAKING ARM!” she thought as she headed back to town. The service of MEGADOM was to occur in a few hours and she did not want to be late. As she soared over the city people below looked up and cheered. Liz had never felt so good in her life, so powerful, no, that wasn’t the word. She felt omnipotent.

Lance Byrons was out on the balcony of his penthouse on the thirtieth floor of one of the many building he owned. He turned to the meek woman standing behind him looking nervous.

“You ready Jane?” he asked.

“Um…Mr. Byrons, I, I am not sure. I mean, I am so thankful for the job and all but, what….what if she doesn’t come?” she asked.

Lance sighed as he turned his laptop towards Jane. “She is back in the city, although she hasn’t gone to wherever she lives. The last missile that hit her during her interview contained very small amount of radiation that can be detected. Of course, the military doesn’t know I know about that, but because she is slightly radioactive we can track her location. Or at least until she takes a shower or washes that uniform of hers. And after this interview, Mega Woman will not want any negative press. She will come,” he said as he pointed towards the railing of his balcony.

“Besides, we talked about this. I doubt she would accept an invitation from me so this is the only way to get her attention. If I can convince her to work for me, I won’t have to try and unlock the stupid gem. She and I together would be the ultimate power,” he said as he smiled.

“Now you can either jump, or I will fire you and make sure you never work in this town, or anywhere else again,” he snarled.

“Y…yes sir,” Jane said as she approached the railing. She timidly climbed on top of it. She looked down at Lance.

“Go ahead Jane. Just as we talked about,” he said.

Jane shook her head up and down. “Mega Woman! Mega Woman please please help me!” she said as she took a jump off.

Mega Woman was flying close to the Byrons Building when she heard the scream. Using her mega vision she saw a slim girl falling from the top of the building. Mega Woman poured on the speed and soared towards the screaming girl. She was soon with arm’s length.

“Gotcha!” Mega Woman said as she slowed their descent down and floated in the air.

A trembling Jane looked up and let out a slight gasp. “M...Mega Woman...” she stammered.

“That is right. And your name is?” she asked.

“J…Jane. Jane Crowder,” she said. “I, um, I slipped, thank you Mega Woman.”

Mega Woman smiled. “Slipped huh? You know I can read your mind if I want right? So why don’t you tell me the truth,” she said.

“You can, can read my mind? Incredible, of, of course you can. I, I watched you last night on TV. I, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. But, okay, the, the truth. My boss wants to see you,” she said

“And who is your boss that would let you fall off the top of a building?” Mega Woman asked angrily.

“Lance Byrons, um, Mr. Byrons. He is waiting for you in the penthouse above.”

Mega Woman looked up. “Is he now,” she said as she levitated up towards the penthouse. It did not take her long to get there. She landed and put Jane down. Jane looked up, shocked at how tall and how muscular Mega Woman was in person.

“Ah Mega Woman, I see you got my invitation,” Lance said as he came out of his penthouse and pointed to Jane. “Jane, please see if Mega Woman would like any refesh…”

“I don’t want any refreshments Mr. Byrons, but I would like to know why I should’t haul your ass to jail for trying to kill your assistant,” she said.

“No refreshments then? Okay, back to business. Haul me to jail. Hmmm….I guess you could, but Jane will never testify I put her up to this. And given how pathetic her life is, no jury won’t believe she wouldn’t jump off a building and try and kill herself. You are smart Mega Woman, but I am clever,” he said. “But now that you are here, please come in and hear what I have to say,” he said as he walked into his penthouse.

Mega Woman read his mind. He had a strong mind and all she could read was that he wanted to team up with her. Against her better judgment she followed him inside the penthouse.

“Please, have a seat,” he said as he pointed to a large, oversized chair. “You see, I was prepared for someone of your….size and stature Mega Woman,” he said as he sat down. Mega Woman followed and sat down in the chair.

“I am sure you have used your incredible mental powers to read my mind so I won’t take long and will get to the point. Simply put, you are remarkable. Best I can tell, the most powerful, most perfect being ever to have graced this planet. I knew you were strong, very strong, but what you did yesterday. Lifting a billion pounds...”

“One point three billion pounds,” Mega Woman corrected.

“Right, 1.3 billion pounds, my apologias, with one arm. Flying around the world in two minutes, being invulnerable and a host of other super powers. Remarkable. What I want to discuss is this. I could assist you, help you in your quest to help people. I have technology that could allow you to find and any emergency in the world. Technology that would allow you to find the fastest route to any emergency in the world,” he said.

“And in return?” she asked.

“In return, you work for me. I have certain interests around the world. Certain people, governments, that I would need you to lean on to be sure I can get what I want. Oh, and unlimited resources and money. All the money you could handle or want. Think of it Mega Woman, you could continue to do good. More good than you do now. All you have to do is my bidding.”

“Ha!” Mega Woman laughed as she stood up. “I don’t know types of dealings you are into. I could probe your mind and find out but I don’t have to. I am sure they are illegal. I am doing plenty of good without your help Mr. Byrons. I decline your offer,” she said as she started walking out.

“Mega Woman know this. I won’t be making this offer again. It is one time, and one time only. Do know this. If my interests should ever cross with yours, I will be forced to destroy you,” he said.

Mega Woman stopped and turned around. “Really?” she said exacerbated. “Destroy me?” she said as she flexed her biceps. Two monstrous boulders of pure, female power rose off her arms to almost unlimited heights. “Maybe you seem to have forgotten what you saw last night. I am invulnerable. The thought of you destroying me is laughable. But,” she said as she levitated towards him and grabbed his shirt. She easily hoisted him up.

“I could destroy you in an instant, in multiple ways,” she said as she dropped him back down to the couch. She turned and levitated towards the balcony and stopped, turning her attention to Jane.

“Jane. You are better than this. Get some self-worth and get a new job. Jumping off a balcony to get my attention? Get some self-esteem Jane,” she said as she floated over the balcony and flew off towards the MEGADOM service.

Byron stood up and went over to his safe. He opened it up and took out his gem. “If she won’t agree to work for me than on to plan two,” he thought.

“Jane. Go to the basement and get the lab ready. I am going to unlock the powers of this gem tonight whether it kills me or not,” he said as Jane scurried towards the elevator to go to the lab.
