A visit to the family farm after an extended period.
September 5 Prompt:

Abandoned to the Wild

The land rises and falls
Like coming home after all these years
Chartreuse walls have faded,
No longer the happy bright colour
That welcomes one and all
To the tiny farm house
In the valley of Casey’s Mountain
Now the walls collapse
And the floors swell and roll
With weather and loneliness.
No heat permeates the walls;
No laughter sings through the rooms;
Webs have even blown
Leaving the house abandoned by all.
Only the lush vegetation
Threatens to enter
And take it back
To nothingness.
This was my home.
My place of unconditional love.
My grandparents lived here.
Calendar after calendar flips
The passage of days
My grandfather’s cap
No longer hangs by the door
No dishes line the shelves
Only the wind moves through the trees
They grow unbidden,
Tall and strong,
Protectors of days gone by.
